MAESTRO ALBERTO ULLOA
1950-2011
The wire services reported, "The Dominican painter and sculptor
Alberto Ulloa, considered one of the most important artists of the
country, died today in Santo Domingo hours after surgery for pulmonary
edema... after overcoming a valve replacement and myocardial
revascularization, performed by a team of specialists from Mount Sinai
Hospital, New York..." Maestro Alberto Ulloa, 61 years old, is gone.
He has been our inspiration for years. His creative spirit, work
ethic, and extraordinary capacity to produce is unrivaled. He was
relentless in life and work.
A genuine force of nature. An inverted hurricane churning: he, a
fantastic tropical storm producing wave after wave of magical colors,
intense human portraits, animal and other life forms.
His romantic and powerful vision that embraced old Spain was very new
and fresh. Uniquely Latin American and Caribbean. He never stopped
inventing and reinventing. He never stopped. A restless perfectionist
willing to take the next step into the boundless universe of
imagination.
Ulloa is a breakthrough artist. His great talent and immense body of
work cannot be contained. He is one of the greatest Latin American
artists. Destined to be discovered. His paintings, drawings,
sculptures and novels evidence a very special person with huge gifts.
Ulloa was genius.
His life's work will open hearts, minds and souls. He will profoundly
touch anyone willing to learn about him. He will pave the way for
artists from small towns like Altamira, near Puerto Plata, Dominican
Republic, a poor Caribbean nation known for baseball, beautiful
beaches and a faded sugar economy.
Ulloa, the little known artist, found his way into the Encyclopedia
Britannica, inducted into the permanent collections of the most
prestigious museums in the Caribbean. His numerous international
expositions extended to nearly every continent . His followers made
Ulloa´s art travel the entire world. His work can be found in
galleries and collections in Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, New York,
Caracas, Taipei and Dubai; the subject of three books and a thousand
pages that analyze his art.
